CBS and Viacom will merge

The television network CBS and the conglomerate Viacom, which separated during 2006, has successfully negotiated a deal to merge again under one roof and thus create a new entity with revenues exceeding $ 28 billion.

ViacomCBS It will be the name of the new giant that will seek to consolidate itself as a “world leader, multiplatform and premium content” bet that will be enhanced by its brands. All this to be “one of the most important content producers in the world.”

The company's portfolio will include CBS, Showtime, Nickelodeon, MTV, BET, Comedy Central and Paramount, in addition to the entire film business of the latter. That is, in total there will be more than 140 thousand episodes of television series and more than 3600 movies.

In that sense, one of the main consequences will be to put the entire Star Trek franchise under one roof, since CBS owns the television aspect, while Paramount controls its films.

To date, CBS has several new television series in the folder to exploit the Star Trek brand, while Paramount has two scripts, including the project that involves Quentin Tarantino. But the new deal could have medium and long-term consequences for the Starfleet saga.

The merger will be subject to regulatory approvals, but ViacomCBS expects the agreement to close at the end of 2019.
